Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon sights the Florida coast. He sails into Biscayne Bay and notes in his journal, “reached Chequescha,” which becomes the first recorded name of the Miami area. It is unknown if Ponce de Leon or his crew came into contact with the native population, the Tequesta people, who inhabited southeastern Florida.
